Lumber Grades

FAS, A & Better, C & Better
In their respective species, these are the clearest grades commercially sold.

#1 Common & Better, Construction Grade (#2)
These grades may include narrower widths and shorter lengths, with more defects developing.

Measures

Board Foot (BF) —The equivalent of a piece 1" thick, 12" long, and 12" wide (lumber less than 1" in thickness is measured as 1"). To calculate board feet, multiply thickness times width times length and then divide by 12.

For Example:
1" x 6" x 12' ÷ 12 = 6 bf • 1-1/4" (1.25) x 8" x 12' ÷ 12 = 10 bf • 1-1/2" (1.5) x 9" x 11' ÷ 12 = 12 bf • 1-3/4" (1.75) x 13" x 14' ÷ 12 = 27 bf
